Introducing DotSpatial - an Open Source .NET GIS Framework

Session Type:
Tech Session
Presenter(s):
Mr Matthew Klein, Idaho State University
Dr Daniel Ames, Idaho State University

DotSpatial is a free, open source, set of libraries developed on the Microsoft .NET framework which provides projection, visualization, and extensibility features. DotSpatial allows rapid development and deployment of C# and VB.NET based spatial data, analysis, and mapping applications. DotSpatial has been downloaded over 25000 times since the project started in April 2010, has 74 team members.  This presentation will provide an introduction to the DotSpatial project including, goals, target users, project status and project roadmap. Additionally, a few representative software applications built on DotSpatial will be presented.

Speaker Bio:

Matthew Klein is a software engineer who has contributed to the DotSpatial project and improved its compatibility with its predecessor, MapWindow.

What about the commercialisation of Open Source Geospatial Solutions!

Session Type:
Tech Session
Presenter(s):
Luc Vaillancourt, Spatialytics

The decision to buy technologies and implement them within their organization is far from being only guided by the functional aspect and the price.

There are a multitude of other factors, more subtle but equally important as functionality and price. In the world of Open Source, it is often a question of interoperability, freedom, community, immediacy, ... but the buyer also needs to be secured with other factors, those he is accustomed to see from the conventional and organized players, reassuring factors.

We will explore these decision factors as well as steps coming before adoption, the ones capable of catching their attention ( = marketing).

The market demand for Geospatial solutions is growing. The offer is therefore expanding. The views of supply and demand will be exposed.

For now, the burden of proof rests on the "offering", from the companies involved in pushing Geospatial Open Source solutions, in order to better communicate and convince the market.

Speaker Bio:

Luc Vaillancourt is the President of Spatialytics Solutions Inc. (Spatialytics) , a company involved in the Business Intelligence and Geospatial industries, founded in 2009. Luc Vaillancourt founded BALIZ Inc. in 2007, a consulting firm helping organisations to maximize their usage of geospatial technologies and insights obtained from geographic information. BALIZ is now dedicated on publishing BALIZ-MEDIA.com, a French speaking online magazine and a news & blog aggregator covering the Geospatial industry. Luc Vaillancourt founded KOREM Inc. in 1993 and led the growth of this company in the Geospatial industry until 2005.

Mapnik2GeoTools

Session Type:
Tech Session
Presenter(s):
Mr David Winslow, OpenGeo
Mrs Alyssa Wright

For years, Mapnik has been the cartographic tool of choice for web designers. Sometimes however a web map requires more than rendered tiles. It requires the power of a complete geospatial service. Wouldn't it be nice to bring Mapnik's design prowess into GeoServer's full-featured, batteries-included management interface and standards-compliant services? Now you can!

In this talk we introduce mapnik2geotools -- a configuration importer from Mapnik to GeoServer. We will sample renderings from Open.Mapquest.com Mapnik styles and data from OpenStreetMap, compare the quality and styling options of Mapnik and GeoServer's rendering engines, and discuss future directions for the toolkit.

Speaker Bio:

David Winslow is a software developer at OpenGeo working on GeoNode, GeoServer, OpenLayers, and GeoExt as the task demands. Some of his other projects include the GeoServer CSS extension and the Scala variant of GeoScript.

WPS Shootout

Session Type:
Tech Session
Presenter(s):
Jody Garnett, OSGeo
Gérald Fenoy, GeoLabs SARL

Web Processing Service is one of the hottest new areas of server side development. So hot in fact that that we got in a bit of trouble last year (brawls in the halls, raised voices and a certain lack of fashion sense).

On a more serious note we are really pleased to offer a panel format discussion with leaders from a selection of key web processing service providers.

  • 52N - Bastian Schäffer deegree
  • GeoServer - Andrea Amie
  • GeoTools - Jody Garnett
  • PyWPS - Jachym Cepicky
  • ZOO-project - Gérald Fenoy

Several of the projects have been able to participate in a "wps-shootou" on interoperability. This is a particularly tough subject as each server is responsible both for advertising processes, but also has an opportunity to schedule the work of other servers. Come and see how they all did (or did not!) function.

Web Processing Service offers an opportunity for your organisation to make use of the web not just for data publication; but also for analysis and modeling. WPS offers a great solution allowing GIS to finally be used in a modern service oriented architecture with applications ranging from climate modeling through to simple GIS functionality for web applications.

Attend this talk for an entertaining discussion on the state of play in the wps market today. There will be an opportunity for questions.

Speaker Bio:

The "execute process" posse has arrived in the west on a mission of peace. In honor of the parlay pistols will remain holstered for the duration of these proceedings. Instead an entertaining and lively discussion will be moderated by a neutral third party.

Integration of GeoServer with NoSQL databases

Session Type:
Tech Session
Presenter(s):
Alan Mangan, Data Tactics Corp.
David Boyd, Data Tactics Corp.

This presentation will introduce a GeoServer Plugin for the NoSQL Mongo Database. Cloud-based data storage built around NoSQL document-oriented stores continues to grow, this plugin offers GeoServer-based visualization of geospatial data stored in MongoDB. The plugin allows a MongoDB instance with GeoJSON-encoded data to be used as a backing store for GeoServer. The plugin, developed in Java, is available under a GNU GPL v2 license.

The presentation will address the derivation of implied schema from a schema-less NoSQL store for use with GeoServer's Feature objects, handling type conflicts in document fields, performance issues calculating this schema for a new GeoServer Data Store, and the use of MongoDB's map-reduce to distribute the load when operating in a sharded cloud environment. Each MongoDB collection is generally stored as a separate GeoServer layer, although mixed-geometry collections can be split out into corresponding layers for visualization.

Speaker Bio:
Mr. Mangan is Senior Software Developer at Data Tactics. He has a broad range of experience in software engineering and development; including scientific visualization, business intelligence, and middleware development.

Mr. Boyd is Director of Engineering and Research & Development at Data Tactics. He has over 30 years experience in geospatial development, and integrating and deploying complex data intensive systems. He has extensive involvement in the development and fielding of the Army Distributed Common Ground Systems. He also has considerable experience integrating, processing and exploitation of FMV, Imagery, and SIGINT as part of tactical, airborne, and shipboard implementations.
