Welcome Reception, Tuesday
The welcome reception will be at the Wynkoop Brewing Company, in Denver's fun LoDo (Lower Downtown) district, on Tuesday from 6pm to 9pm. If possible please register and pick up your badge at the Sheraton beforehand, this will make it much easier to get everyone in smoothly! But we will have a list of attendees there so you should still be able to get in without your badge if necessary.
The Wynkoop was Colorado's first brewpub and they make a range of fine beers on the premises. We'll be upstairs and will have free use of the Wynkoop's many pool tables. Wynkoop founder John Hickenlooper went on to become Mayor of Denver and is now Governor of Colorado.
The Wynkoop's pool pro, Melissa "The Viper" Little, will be there too. She's ranked in the top 20 female pool players in the world, and will be doing "challenge the pro" games - but she's very friendly and happy to give you tips, so don't be intimidated! She mainly plays "9 ball" - if you don't know the rules you can check them out here.
The Wynkoop is at 1634 18th St, which is about a mile from the Sheraton. The easiest way to get there is to take the free 16th Street shuttle bus right outside the Sheraton. Head towards Union Station, which is to the left as you walk out of the Sheraton onto 16th. Get off at Wynkoop St, take a right and walk for two blocks, past Union Station on your left, to 18th St. You can also walk, which should take 15-20 minutes. If everyone leaves at the same time we will overload the bus system, so we hope people will spread their departures between 5:30 and 6:30 or so :) !!
If you arrive early (or indeed any time - it's open until 9pm), another interesting spot to check out in the neighborhood is the Tattered Cover bookstore, which is a Denver Institution. It's at 16th and Wynkoop, right where you get off the bus. There's also an antique map store, the Old Map Gallery, at 1550 Wynkoop Street, just behind the Tattered Cover.
If we end up overflowing the space at the Wynkoop (which is possible!), or you just want to explore, there are lots of other fun bars and restaurants within a block or two, including the Cruise Room, Fadó, the ChopHouse, and the Ice House Tavern.
